Epic Entertainment: A Custom Interior Designed Music Room & Basement Built for Generations
When RCQ Design took on the challenge of transforming a basement into a multi-functional entertainment haven, the mission was clear: create a space that invites joy, togetherness, and a little friendly competition. But as the design unfolded, what emerged was something more than just a basement—it became a multi-generational retreat, blending sophistication with play, and modern aesthetics with personalized functionality.
The Goal
The client envisioned a space where their family and friends could gather for epic dart tournaments, impromptu dance parties, cozy movie nights, and quality time. The basement was meant to be a true entertainment destination, not just an extension of the home, but a destination in its own right. A place where grandparents, kids, and friends could each find a corner to enjoy.
The Scope
The project spanned the entire basement, turning it into a dynamic, multi-zone experience: a family sitting area, pool table, dart board, bar, bathroom, custom media wall, and even spaces not pictured here—a playroom, dance studio, gym, and sauna. Every square inch was thoughtfully designed to balance aesthetic intention with everyday use.
The Sought-After Interior Design Aesthetic?
The design blends refined industrial with playful sophistication. Think fluted wood cladding, geometric wall panels, industrial lighting, and weathered LVT floors that echo the character of vintage factories—but polished with warm walnut finishes, a custom vanity, and an oversized denim couch that just begs you to flop down with a drink in hand.
This was a space meant to feel collected, not curated. Comfortable but intentional.
Design Phases
The design process unfolded in layers:
Discovery & Space Planning – Understanding how the client would use the space, what was essential (a pool table, cozy seating, lots of hangout areas), and what could elevate the experience.
Material & Fixture Selection – This phase brought in the character—like the commercial wall panels repurposed for residential use behind the bar, and the matte finishes that allowed the industrial fixtures to blend rather than dominate.
Custom Builds & Installations – From the walnut fireplace surround to the asymmetrical vanity and media unit, custom details were brought in to make the basement entirely one-of-a-kind.
Final Styling & Comfort Layer – Plush pillows, inviting fabrics, and just the right lighting finished off each area.
Favorite Parts of The Interior Design Process
For Rina at RCQ, the joy was in creating a space where everyone could do their own thing—without stepping on each other’s toes. Whether you're watching a game, shooting pool, sipping a drink at the bar, dancing in the studio, or playing with the kids, there's a spot designed just for that.
Plus, the custom media wall stands out as a personal favorite: fluted walnut panels laid horizontally to mirror the bar, a boxed-out black granite surround that adds drama, and asymmetry that feels just balanced enough.
Least Parts of The Interior Design Process
Ironically, it was not adding the bar! The client hadn’t initially envisioned a bar in the space, but the RCQ team saw the potential and added it into the plan. It added complexity—but also tremendous value and flow to the basement. Any “least favorite” aspects were simply challenges that made the final product even better.
The Unique Challenges
This project stands out for its multi-generational focus. It wasn’t just about beauty or function—it was about creating a basement that lives and breathes with the energy of a big, active family. It’s rare to design a space where you can move from a gym and sauna, to a dartboard tournament, to a playroom dance-off, and then land at a stylish bar for a nightcap—all without ever leaving the basement.
Every finish—from the fluted textures to the matte black fixtures, asymmetrical design choices, and smart performance fabrics—was chosen to marry style with function. And the result? A truly epic basement that doesn’t just serve a purpose—it brings people together.
